Floating Laboratory for Sustainable Drive Solutions
The VULKAN Hybrid and Electrive Solutions team is currently converting a specially acquired passenger ship, a Venetian “Motoscafo”, to sustainable drive technology for demonstration purposes under the working title “Laboboat”.
As part of this sustainability project, the ship will be converted into a floating laboratory that will sail the Venice lagoon in future. VULKAN will use this unique vessel to test the most advanced propulsion solutions. These include both serial and parallel hybrid and electric drives. They will be tested on the “Laboboat” under real navigation conditions for their efficiency and adaptability. It will also be possible to collect and evaluate relevant data on the various operating modes.
The ship will be designed according to the plug-and-play principle so that the systems can be easily installed and uninstalled and can be adapted to current and future solutions.
The “Laboboat” will provide VULKAN with an important tool for demonstrating the possibilities of hybrid and fully electric drives to customers under real conditions. It will also be used for training purposes.
We will keep you up to date here on the further progress of this unique project.
