New TDS Plafrix shifting clutch combination for hybrid tugs

VULKAN Couplings presents a combination of clutch and highly flexible coupling, specially designed for use in (harbour) tugs. With this innovating product, the Herne company especially known for manufacturing highly flexible couplings, is moving forward along the path from a mere supplier of high quality components into a provider of complete solutions.

To develop and market the new TDS Plafrix clutch, VULKAN Couplings and DESCH Antriebstechnik, Arnsberg, have entered into close cooperation. DESCH Antriebstechnik GmbH & Co. KG is a worldwide active manufacturer of innovative products for drivelines for the complete machine building industry.

Both companies have brought their system competence into the development of the TDS Plafrix. TDS stands for Tug Drive Solution and Plafrix is the well-known market name of the DESCH Planox® clutch, which has been already successfully marketed by VULKAN Couplings.

hybrid-coupling-TDS-Plafrix.pngThe background for the development of the TDS Plafrix includes the increasingly strict laws and regulations for watercraft operation in coastal waters, together with the increasing number of Emission Control Areas (ECA), which make alternative drive concepts necessary. Emission Control Areas (ECAs) are special navigation areas established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Specific environmental guidelines apply to these zones, e.g. regarding emissions, so that special restrictions on sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide and soot particle emissions exist in these areas. Tugs are particularly affected by this as, by their very nature, they perform their work almost constantly close to the coast, and thus in ECAs located in many parts of the world. In addition to this challenging field of application, tugs usually share a certain load profile, so that the market regards hybrid drives in particular as a future-proof solution for this application. Moreover, in the version currently favoured by influential engine manufacturers and designers, an electric motor between diesel and gearbox is switched onto the drive shaft. The TDS Plafrix clutch combination, designed and optimised exactly for this application, and made ready for serial production, represents a cost-effective and weight-optimised solution.

In addition to mounts for the engine required flexible mounting, displacement couplings tailored to this solution and able to release the electric motor both from resulting reaction forces and vibrations possibly transmitted through the housing, are available in VULKAN Couplings portfolio.

In-depth knowledge of the drive system individual components interaction, suitable products for drive system tuning from a single source, and the choice of the right partner, are the base to equip such systems successfully. A major step on the path from a component supplier into a competent system partner in the shipping industry.

Caterpillar again honors American VULKAN Corporation

SQEPA_VULKAN.jpg The US American subsidiary of the VULKAN Group again honored with the Gold status of the Supplier Quality Excellence Process Award. This is the most prestigious award given by Caterpillar, the leading manufacturer of construction and mining machinery, diesel and natural gas engines, as well as diesel-electric locomotives.

And the award only goes to its most important suppliers specifically those that have process and product quality which meet the very highest standards. For the second time in a row American VULKAN Corporation is the only supplier of couplings to have received this award.

During the course of vendor certification quality, delivery performance, development and sales service, capacity planning, as well as the status of the Six-Sigma quality management system, were scrutinised and evaluated in accordance with a certification plan comprising stringent specifications. Besides that, the SQEP method evaluates how processes and quality are controlled and documented as well as the management review programme, the instruction and training system and the environment and health programme.

Deliveries from the USA to Caterpillar cover the entire product range of VULKAN Couplings and VULKAN Drive Tech.

"We are very proud that we have been awarded by Caterpillar again. It's a great confirmation of our outstanding quality management and motivates us to develop steadily in order to continue to meet the growing demands of our customers" , says Thomas Falz, Managing Director of American VULKAN Corporation.

Green Light for the LOKTRACER

The French chain of workshops Feu Vert has recently started using the trace gas leak detection system LOKTRACE from VULKAN Lokring and is celebrating its first successes with customers.

Due to the molecular size of hydrogen even the smallest of leaks are reliably detected. The evaporator can easily be checked through the air vents in the centre console. In addition, the LOKTRACE trace gas leak detection system complies with the most stringent European laws on leak detection in automotive air conditioners.

Jean Pierre Stefani, Technical Manager of Feu Vert, is delighted with the speed and simplicity of the system: "This is exactly what we want to offer our customers: fast and reliable diagnosis and an affordable solution.

The French workshop chain Feu Vert with over 400 branches in four countries is one of the 250 most successful franchise companies in Europe. The company offers its customers all kinds of auto repair and maintenance and sets itself apart from the competition above all through its customer-friendliness and speed.

"For many years, the services provided by Feu Vert have also included the detection of leaks in vehicle air conditioning systems", Patrick Peignard, sales and marketing director of VULKAN Lokring explains. "For this, the company is now using VULKAN Lokring's trace gas leak detection LOKTRACE instead of UV dye."

Using the LOKTRACE system, a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen is filled into the air conditioning. Escaping hydrogen can be detected by means of the hydrogen leak detector LOKTRACER TLD.500. Here the advantages compared to other leak detection methods are plain to see: There is no cross-sensitivity to other gases, which would lead to inaccurate test results.

Girls' Day at VULKAN

This year VULKAN has again participated in the nationwide Girls' Day. Supported by the government the objective of the initiative is to give girls an insight into technical jobs and get them excited for this. On April 23, 16 girls between 10 and 15 years of age had the chance to have a look behind the scenes of VULKAN. Divided in small groups, the girls visited the production halls of VULKAN Lokring and VULKAN Kupplungs- und Getriebebau in Herne. At VULKAN Lokring, the manufacturer of solder-free tube connections, the girls could help in weighing and packing the connecting components, or produce key-chains. Additionally the high-tech CNC machines that are in use in couplings plant were exciting for the girls. Lara and Jule, who spent the Girls' Day at VULKAN office North in Hamburg, were particularly lucky: They had the opportunity to see the VULKAN couplings in operation when they went to a container ship. In total, the feedback from the participants was very positive and even some admit: "Yes, we are interested in these kinds of jobs."
