CDMS Hardware Requirements

The CDMS system is implemented in a multi-user environment based on the THEOS operating system. There are a number of different possible hardware and software configurations, each of which consists of a central computer and one "terminal" per user.

Central Computer
The main computer consists of a Pentium class machine, equipped with the following minimum components (please confirm details of hardware configurations before purchasing hardware).

User Stations
Individual users may access the TARGET from networked Windows computers or "dumb" terminals. Most new installations use the network method of connection.

TARGET supports standard Ethernet connections for Windows 95/98/XP computers running TCP/IP protocol. HSI supplies a client program to be installed on each workstation. The speed and capacity of the Windows machine is not important as long as screen resolution is at least 800x600 pixels.

Wyse 50 compatible dumb terminals may also be used on the system, but are not capable of displaying pictures.

Printers
For most installations, we recommend at least one dot-matrix printer and one laser printer. The dot-matrix printer is less expensive to run for reports and is the only safe way to print computer checks. The laser printer will produce the best quality for quotes and letters. Each printer must support the following functions:

As an option, we suggest use of a laser printer that supports tray selection. The Panasonic KX-P4440 provides dual-tray paper supply at low cost and is a good choice.
With enough hardware ports available, CDMS will support a total of 16 connected printers. Each user can access up to four printers under program control.

Power Protection
While not a system requirement, we strongly recommend the use of appropriate power protection on your system. As a result of testing in our lab, we have found the FERRUPS system from Best Power Technology to be a solid performer. We have produced software to integrate this unit into the CDMS system to provide automatic shutdown and other functions. The FERRUPS is available from Halliburton Systems or from other resellers.
